The Painter of Ghosts is a fictional name representing cancer. The inspiration source of this song was the intent to describe the unfortunate situation in which many inhabitants of the Italian southern region of Calabria are dealing with: the illicit toxic and non toxic waste disposal. The ‘Ndrangheta (southern Italian mafia mob) buys the waste from Italy itself and other European nations, digs it into mountains or throws it into the depths of the Mediterranean sea, polluting the whole ecosystem. The consequences are many, aside from damaging the entire territory, the cases of deaths caused by cancer and leukemia are increasing enormously. That’s a massive disaster unknown even to the majority of Italians. Unfortunately these problems are widespread not only in Calabria but all over southern Italy.
